Staying in the UK

Finley Chung makes the case for a staycation or UK holiday even when Covid travel bans are lifted

In October 2021, in that brief time of un-lockdown, me and the family took a holiday in Norfolk. Specifically, we stayed in a cottage in Wrentham for two nights. It really reminded me of why the UK is a brilliant place to stay – and that that won’t change even with international travel.

My “cottage break” was a superb get away from the daily worries of university home study during my final year. The break was brilliant. Each day had a country walk, followed by a pub lunch, and an evening back in front of the TV at the cottage.

Sure, it wasn’t sat in the sun in an all-inclusive holiday.

I explored country walks that I would’ve usually turned my nose up at, visiting country pubs and spending time with family. And it was relaxing. It really encapsulated what a UK holiday can be about.

Example of one of the country paths we found ourselves on, Myself, my Auntie and Uncle and their dog, Boomer.

Norfolk was new to me and I never would have gone if we hadn’t booked this cottage. But it was really worth exploring this new area.

And there is plenty to discover in the UK.

Beauty spots include Cornwall, Norfolk, Devon, and Sandbanks – and many more I don’t know about. Then there are the big city breaks such as Liverpool or Manchester, even London if you’re not a local.

And I believe the less explored parts of this green and pleasant land will become ever more popular to UK tourists as Covid concentrates the mind on where to go. After all people travel from all over the world to ramble around the UK.

Country walks for us city livers are now a main selling point of UK holidays. After all we’ve all taken up walking now in Covid times.

My family has even booked, decided to stay in the UK, in 2021. Two weeks in Cornwall! And without any sarcasm I am really looking forward to it. I know it will give that sense of the new, of escapism, of putting behind day to day problems.

UK holidays allow you to explore different places you would have never seen before. They will broaden your horizons much more than sitting on a beach in the med.
